“Who is a wise person? Who knows the solution to a problem? A person’s wisdom brightens his appearance and softens his harsh countenance.” --Ecclesiastes 8:1
This quote has both personal and practical implications and embodies my life’s pursuit. Practically – and in business - when people find real answers to problems, the discovery brings joy and relief. Personally, when a person finds true wisdom, he or she finds meaning and purpose.
My professional pursuits first led me into business education. I received both my undergraduate degree and my MBA in business finance. For quite a number of years, I worked in corporate finance for several large and small firms. Eventually I became the Controller for a high-tech manufacturing company and began to realize that I wanted to transition from the corporate world into a professional context where I could more directly apply my knowledge. I considered earning my PhD in Finance but soon realized that public accounting was a much better fit and would allow me to start a firm and work with small to medium sized business clients directly.
I started Gheen & Co., CPA, LLC in 2010. From the beginning, our emphasis has been on small to medium sized service-based businesses that we can serve with a system of tax planning, business planning, and advisory services. We have been diligent – passionate - about applying technology to the accounting and tax industry and have become a model firm of the future. I greatly enjoy seeing our employees grow and develop and am passionate about perfecting the system we have created, which serves both our employees and clients so well.
My wife and I have been married since 2002. We have four kids: three boys and a girl. We work diligently with them, just like I work to find solutions and improve life for our clients, employees, and myself. I am a life-long learner, a scholar, a Christ-follower. I love being outdoors during all four seasons of the year in central New York State. I am a reader. I am an avid rower – both indoor and outdoor. I greatly enjoy tackling the challenges of personal and professional life and helping people around me grow, develop, and flourish in every possible way.

"Wisdom is knowing what to do next, skill is knowing how to do it, and virtue is doing it." --David Star Jordan
I love this quote because it speaks directly to what I have attempted throughout my nearly 30 years of organizational leadership – help people (and myself) see what needs to be done, coach them in how to do it, and encourage them to follow through with it. I have held leadership positions in the military, as an Army officer; in the non-profit sector, both as staff and board member; and in the for-profit world, as a consultant and an employee. My gifts lie in identifying organizational, systemic challenges and collaboratively devising and implementing measurable, successful solutions. I am also an experienced learning facilitator and speaker. I have a PhD in Organizational Leadership with a Human Resource Development concentration.
At Gheen & Co., CPA I leverage my organizational and leadership knowledge and experience to both help lead the Gheen & Co. team and to serve as a consulting resource to Gheen & Co. clients. I thoroughly enjoy the challenge of leading a globally distributed workforce and maintaining a healthy culture and “workplace” even though we do not operate in a traditional office setting.
When I’m not at work, I enjoy walking my dog with my wife, playing games with my kids and friends, and riding my mountain bike in the beautiful Colorado outdoors.

"Passion is the log that keeps the fire of purpose blazing." - Oprah Winfrey
At the start of my career, I didn't envision my role within the accounting and tax industry to be as diverse and rewarding as it has become. Working with small business owners was the catalyst that kindled an unexpected passion within my professional career. I strive to not only address my clients' accounting needs but to get to know their business, learn who they are as individuals, not just as business professionals, and discover their priorities and goals. Taking this comprehensive, more holistic, approach to our engagement enables me to not only serve clients as an accountant, but as an advisor, a coach, and a friend.
I began my academic journey at Northern Michigan University, where I completed my undergraduate degree in Accounting/Corporate Finance. Soon after graduation, I successfully passed the CPA exam. Learning has been a lifelong passion of mine, and over the past seven years, I've completed two Master of Science degrees, one in Accounting at Southern New Hampshire University and another in Taxation through the Denver University Sturm College of Law. My accumulated knowledge and industry experience enable me to guide small business owners through the complexities of tax compliance and work with them to establish a strong, dynamic financial foundation that will help them achieve long-term success.
As the longest tenured employee at Gheen & Co., CPA, I've had the pleasure of establishing long-term working relationships with clients. My team and I work proactively with clients throughout the year and strive to foster collaboration and open communication on a regular basis. My unique strengths lie in designing and implementing Advanced Tax Plans, facilitating entity restructuring and buy/sell agreements, and managing my team to ensure all clients enjoy the maximum value our services can offer.
When I'm not working, I enjoy spending time with my husband and my daughter, hiking with my two dogs, and exploring our recently adopted state of Tennessee. After living abroad for three years, I'm an avid traveler; I always have my passport handy and am eager to add to my worldwide adventures.

“Over and over again courts have said there is nothing sinister in so arranging one’s affairs as to keep taxes as low as possible. Everybody does so, rich or poor; and all do right, for nobody owes any public duty to pay more than the law demands.” – Judge Learned Hand, Second Circuit Court of Appeals
I am a tax attorney and certified public accountant and at Gheen & Co., CPA, I advise closely held businesses and their owners on complex tax and business issues. I had no idea I wanted to pursue a career in tax until I took my first tax class in law school. In addition to learning from a brilliant professor who was passionate about the subject, I was drawn to the study of tax law because it is something so ubiquitous it impacts everyone in every aspect of our lives. I was also drawn in by the nuances and intellectual challenges of tax law; navigating the tax code is akin to solving a puzzle. During law school I interned with the Internal Revenue Service, Office of Chief Counsel, assisting IRS attorneys in resolving tax disputes before they reached the Tax Court.
After law school I completed a Master of Taxation degree and concurrently finished the CPA and bar exams. During this time, I also helped small and medium sized businesses with their tax compliance and planning. After working with small and medium sized businesses for a few years, I transitioned to working with large global publicly held businesses at a Big 4 consulting firm. After spending 5 years working with large publicly traded clients, I realized I missed working with individuals and their small to medium sized businesses and decided to begin the next phase of my career at Gheen & Co., CPA. I am passionate about helping my clients successfully navigate the complexities of the tax code to mitigate their tax liabilities. At Gheen & Co., CPA, I help my clients increase their profitability and long-term wealth, and I help them understand their tax compliance obligations and risks as well. I have experience assisting clients with state, local and federal tax filings. Additionally, I have experience in consulting with clients on the tax impacts of transactions including, but not limited to, choice of entity, transaction structuring, legal entity rationalization, tax due diligence and tax modeling.
When I am not working, I enjoy spending my time cooking, watching college and professional football, spending time outdoors and working on my less-than-mediocre golf game.

''A dream that you won't fight for will haunt you for the rest of your life''. Stanley Tucci
I am convinced that when you really want something out of life, you should always pursue it no matter what. Always give one hundred percent of your effort to everything you do, and you'll never look back on life wishing to have done more. In the end, no matter what happens, it's always better to say ''I did my best.''
I started my professional career upon graduating with a B.S. in Accountancy and became a Certified Public Accountant in the Philippines. Along the way, I received numerous academic awards and achievements. My first job was as a Tax Associate in a California-based company, which led me to realize that one day I wanted to specialize in and practice US Taxation. After 2 years of work experience, I joined Citi and became an assistant finance manager, wanting to apply my accounting knowledge and gain more experience in the accounting field. I also became a part time accounting and tax professor. However, I quickly realized that what I really want in life is to practice both my tax and accounting skills and specialize in US taxation. Gheen & Co., CPA has offered me this opportunity, beginning as a staff accountant where I can practice both my accounting and tax skills. The company not only gave me a job but also a family that provides the support to pursue my dreams. Having passed the 3-part EA exam, I am now an IRS Enrolled Agent. Currently, I am pursuing my dream of becoming a US CPA. I am excited about where this licensure could lead me in career growth within the company. I not only want to help provide competent CPAs in my country but also, to inspire and motivate them by sharing my experiences in studies, work and life in general.
I am a theatre enthusiast. When I’m not at work, I enjoy joining musical theatre workshops and performing in theatre productions. I also love to watch movies and theatre shows with family and friends. I love to travel outside the country at least once every year, having visited several Asian countries to date. I am very adventurous and love to explore. I also dream of traveling across different states in the US and taking my family and loved ones around the world.
“Be someone’s strength. Be someone’s inspiration. Be someone’s reason to never give up.”
Being the oldest to a family of 9 siblings is a big responsibility, especially when you know that all of them are looking up to you. Life was never easy for us, but my family was enough for me to continue fighting. I encountered so many hurdles in life; I’ve made mistakes and wrong decisions; but all my experiences brought lessons that helped shape who I am now. I want to show my loved ones, especially my children, that there’s always a reason behind everything. That making mistakes is inevitable, but it doesn’t make you less of a person. We all start from nothing, but if we persevere and never give up, we can reach our dreams.
I graduated with a B.S. in Accountancy and have almost 20 years of work experience. I have handled various accounting jobs in different fields of business such as manufacturing, retail, construction and real estate. Before joining Gheen & Co., CPA, I worked for a California based CPA Firm for 10 years where I started as a Junior Staff worked my way up to becoming Payroll & Tax Supervisor. Aside from payroll work, I also assisted in preparing documentation for various clients’ audit (IRS & State related). Giving birth to my 3rd child led me decide to leave my job, but after almost a year of staying at home, I realized that I wanted to do more. I know I can be successful in both being a mom and a career woman. Luckily, Gheen & Co. has given me all the opportunities. They have shown me a bigger picture of what my capabilities are and given me so many opportunities in my career growth. They made me realize that becoming a US CPA is not just a dream but a goal that should be achieved.
If I’m not working, I enjoy spending time at home with my kids, sharing my stories and life lessons. I also love spending time in the kitchen because I also love to cook. If and when I have the free time, I would prefer to use it for traveling; be it locally or out of the country. I love to visit places I’ve never been before, with unique and breathtaking sights, exotic but delicious delicacies, with exciting and adventurous activities. Someday I hope to do skydiving as well.
"Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything." – George Bernard Shaw.
This quote reminds me that change can always be risky and difficult, but change can always bring something beautiful. We discover more of ourselves and we became wiser in life. If we want to achieve our goals, we must learn how to deal with the discomfort. When we shift our mindset and embrace change, we allow ourselves to go beyond our limits, and that is the time we become unstoppable.
I am an innovative and driven accounting professional. I hold a B.S. in Accounting from Filamer Christian University with current standing as a CPA in the Philippines. I started my career as an Auditor and ultimately transferred to a multi-national IT company as a General Accountant. I believe that as an accountant, I have a huge responsibility to our clients by providing quality financial reports, accounting, and tax support. Despite being a young professional, I have developed a solid working relationship with our Gheen & Co., CPA clients by bringing my knowledge and expertise in accounting.
I grew up on a small island in the Philippines and spent my childhood living near the coastal area where my father works as a fish farmer. During my downtime, I like watching social culture documentaries and spend time playing with my nephew. Traveling is something that I really love when I am away from work. I like exploring different cultures, getting to know the life of locals and of course, trying their local food!
“Plan for what is difficult while it is easy, do what is great while it is small.” Sun Tzu
I relate to this very well with accounting where planning always comes before actualizing, and completing tasks requires analyzing and breaking everything down to the very least details. I believe that any difficult task becomes easy when done in manageable steps. I maintain that even in life, achieving greater things starts with taking the smallest steps.
I worked my way through college, graduating with a B.S. in Accountancy and became a Certified Public Accountant in the Philippines. I began my career as an accountant in the banking industry, and for three years focused on the preparation of financial reports. I not only want to advance in financial accounting but also dream to grow and build my future career in the field of taxation.
At Gheen & Co, CPA I was given the opportunity to practice accounting and experience US taxation. Currently, I participate in trainings and seminars preparing myself to take on a license as an IRS Enrolled Agent.
I love coffee and going out with family and friends. Exploring cafes is one of my most favorite leisure activities. Also, being born in the mountain provinces, I feel close to nature. During summer days, I spend my time hiking and climbing the mountains, discovering everything nature offers along the way.

“Learning is a continuous process.”
It is a 2-way learning approach. You do not only acquire skills and knowledge from your mentor, but you also learn from your students. In a decade of work experience in the field of sales, client, and customer services, this approach has helped me to better understand and to contribute to the financial/client/employee's satisfaction and stability of the company. Seeing my clients satisfied and my employees going onto the next step of the ladder is rewarding. It shows me that my contribution directly impacts the business in the most positive way. Hence, the meaning of “success” for me.
I was an architecture student and am a landscape & architecture photography enthusiast. My background in the arts makes a great contribution to my attention to details, and my desire to use every opportunity as a baseline to put theories into action. I leverage my “influential” personality to bring & share my learnings in the past 10 years of leadership experience. A native Pilipino, I love nature tripping, swimming, playing basketball & volleyball, and spending time with my kids.

I believe that staying humble despite all of your achievements and success in life should apply to everyone, and if you have a dream and goals in life, always do your best to achieve them.
“A man is not finished when he’s defeated. He is finished when he quits.” – Richard M. Nixon
If there are any challenges in life (personal or work), never ever quit. Always ask for His guidance and always believe that everything will be okay.
